General Information on the Abilene Electricity Rates

Almost all of Abilene's electricity production is from coal and natural gas, with renewable energy sources making up a small fraction of the total production.

All Abilene consumers (business and residential customers) receive electricity bills that are divided into two categories – supply and delivery charges.

The supply charges include the cost of generating and relaying power. These prices are based in kilowatt-hour (kWh) per month. The charge is different for the several electricity providers throughout the region. The basic difference in cost is between the Standard Offer Service (SOS) and many retail electric suppliers (RES). Any additional electricity usage and supply charges can be avoided if you apply for direct energy delivery with one of the independent suppliers.

The delivery services are provided by the utility company you sign up with. In Abilene, you can choose between Trieagle Energy, Reliant Energy, Constellation Electric and Gas, AEP Texas/AEP North, TXU Energy, Payless Power, 4Change Energy, Oncor Electric Delivery, Green Mountain Energy, First Choice Power, and Cirro Energy. Additionally, the city is also supplied by Frontier Utilities via a regional branch.

The delivery cost consists of the distribution and transmission charge, Combined Public Benefits (CPB) charge, customer service charge, Transmission and Distribution Utility (TDU), and the Competitive Transmission Assessment (CTA) charge.

Energy Deregulation and How It Affects Abilene Electricity Rates

The state of Texas deregulated the electric utility industry in 2002. Since then, individual electricity providers have started to compete via more attractive pricing, competitive electricity plans, as well as, additional maintenance services.

Abilene residents and business owners can register with an independent retail energy provider for their energy needs. However, if a resident does not choose a supplier, the default energy service for the region automatically starts supplying power as Standard Service, and commences charges via autopay.

The Texas Public Utilities Commission regulates electric companies, as well as the Standard Offer Service from your energy service provider.

The Standard Offer is your ‘Price to Compare.’ You can use the Price to Compare to see which supplier offers low rates and competitive service in their area.

Finding the Best Abilene Electricity Rates

All Abilene residents can choose from the multiple electric rates and plans offered by the multiple regional suppliers, based on factors such as their customer service and combined rates. You can then shop for the best prices, but remember to read the fine print on the Electricity Facts Label (EFL), check for any hidden fees, and/or escalating rates.

Alternatively, you can use Arbor’s free TrueRate Protection service to automatically find and switch to the best Abilene electricity rate in your area.

Understanding Abilene Electricity Rates and Plans

Each energy company offers different plans, plan lengths, and electricity prices. You can change your Abilene utilities supplier at any time.

Transferring to another supplier is easy. All you have to do it get a copy of your recent electricity bill, find out which electricity company supplies your energy, and check the cost per energy usage to find out your current rate.

You can use Arbor to find out what the best rate in your area is by using our free savings calculator.

Once you have your supplier and their current rates, you can then compare your current energy supply rate with those offered by other suppliers, and sign up online or over the phone.

Furthermore, different energy suppliers may offer different types of plans.

These are the three plan options you have to choose from in Abilene:

  • Fixed-Rate Plans: A fixed plan requires you to pay a pre-set rate for the entire plan duration. Fixed-rate plans are very stable and you can choose from several rate structures. We recommend fixed-rate plans because they are much safer, and provide price certainty. But be careful; when your term expires, your rates may become variable and increase without notice.  Arbor automatically keeps you on the best fixed-rate plan, so you don’t have to worry about rate hikes at the end of your term.
  • Variable-Rate Plans: These plans depend on the price fluctuations in the energy market. Your energy prices can change every month, depending on the variation in the electric and gas market. Variable-rate plans are not stable but may yield low costs based on seasonal changes.
  • Indexed-Rate Plans: These plans are priced according to the value of a related variable, such as a publicly-traded index. Indexed-rate plans are complex and very variable. Customers are recommended to carefully read the terms of such a plan before signing up for it.

You can choose a plan that's better for your current financial capacity. Many plans may ask for an initial deposit. However, none of the plans available through Arbor will ever require a deposit.

How to Choose the Right Energy Supplier

As an Abilene resident, you have a few competitive options in terms of retail suppliers. You should choose the best electric service provider by checking which energy plan works best for your home, and then compare the rates with the Price to Compare (or your current supplier’s rate).

You can then check which service provider offers the most bill savings and outage protection, and decide accordingly.

Abilene residents can also qualify for one of the energy bill relief and savings programs such as Texas Saver, Maxx Saver, Gexa Saver (with a Gexa Energy account), Smartricity, and Saver Deluxe.

Consumers can pay their electric bill themselves. However, utility bills can be complex and difficult to understand, which is why people trust Arbor to manage their electricity supply services for them. This lets them avoid unnecessary service interruptions and pay the best electricity rate available in Abilene.
